Living with the Mentawai Tribe in the Interior of Siberut Forest

Experience an authentic cultural journey with the Mentawai Tribe, one of the oldest indigenous communities in Indonesia. Stay directly in a traditional house called an Uma, interact with local families, explore the tropical rainforest of Siberut, and learn about traditions that are still preserved today.

This journey is designed for culture lovers, photographers, adventure seekers, and travelers who want to deeply understand the life of the Mentawai people, far from mass tourism.

Travel Itinerary

Day 1

Padang → Siberut → Mentawai Interior

06:10 AM - Meet at Muaro Port, Padang, and complete the ferry ticket process.

07:00 AM - Depart for Siberut Island by Mentawai Fast speedboat.

Transit Stop for approximately one hour in the Pokkai area, North Siberut. Lunch Have lunch at a local restaurant during the transit.

Afternoon Upon arrival in Siberut, the journey continues by local vehicle to a village located upstream. From there, the trip continues by traditional wooden boat, locally called a pompong, along the river toward the interior.

After arrival, take a light trek through the forest and have the first meeting with the Mentawai family and Sikerei. Evening Dinner and rest at the Uma, the traditional Mentawai house.

Day 2 - 3

Living with a Mentawai Family

For two full days, you will live alongside a Mentawai family and take part in their daily activities.

Cultural Activities

- Join traditional river fishing using the local Palikga-gra technique.

- Learn how traditional arrow poison is made.

- Discover medicinal plants and forest vegetation.

- Learn traditional hunting techniques.

- Set up traps for wild animals.

- Search for sago worms, known as Tamra, a traditional Mentawai food.

- Watch the process of making Baiko, a traditional loincloth made from tree bark.

- Participate in various daily activities with the local community.

Evening

Cultural exchange, storytelling, and a deeper introduction to Mentawai life around the fireplace inside the Uma.

Note: The activity schedule is flexible and follows the natural rhythm of the local community. At certain times, guests may have the opportunity to witness sacred traditional rituals if permitted by the family and the Sikerei.

Day 4

Return to Padang

Morning Enjoy the final breakfast with the Mentawai family. Return Journey Travel back to Muara Siberut Port by boat and local land transportation. Lunch Have lunch before the ferry departure.

02:00 PM - Depart for Padang by Mentawai Fast speedboat.

06:00 PM - Arrive in Padang City, and the tour program ends.
